University of Warwick Library Rooftop Tower

Wireless Infrastructure Group operates a strategically placed rooftop tower on the University of Warwick Library Building, delivering resilient multi-operator mobile connectivity across one of the UK’s leading academic campuses. Partially concealed within a Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) shroud, the installation integrates seamlessly with the building’s architecture while supporting critical 4G and 5G services for students, staff, visitors and the wider West Midlands region.

The challenge

The University of Warwick Library Building presented a unique deployment challenge, requiring infrastructure that balanced technical performance with strict aesthetic considerations.

Key requirements included:

  • Delivering discreet rooftop infrastructure that complied with strict planning and visual constraints
  • Supporting multiple mobile network operators with evolving 4G and 5G demands
  • Ensuring high reliability and resilience within a major technology and research corridor
  • Managing the long-term performance considerations associated with GRP screening systems, including structural integrity and RF transparency over time

The site also needed to support increasing demand for mobile connectivity driven by digital learning, research activity and high-density campus usage.

The solution

WIG designed and delivered a rooftop installation comprising both screened and open-mounted infrastructure. The GRP screening houses the VMo2 and Vodafone installation, Airwave equipment and the BT/3UK equipment cabin. BT/3UK antennas are not enclosed within the GRP; instead, they are mounted on steelwork integrated into the parapet along the outer edge of the rooftop. The overall design avoids the use of a traditional “rooftop tower.” Instead, all antennas and associated steelwork are mounted on discrete structural frames, either within the GRP enclosure or positioned at the building perimeter, maintaining a low-profile and compliant aesthetic. The solution delivers both 4G and 5G mobile connectivity helping to provide reliable coverage and capacity for users across the site and within the area.
