We\u2019re delighted to have won \u2018Excellence in commercial deployment by neutral host<\/em>\u2019 at last night\u2019s\u00a0Small Cell Forum Awards 2022<\/a>.\u202fThe award is for our\u202f5G\u202fC-RAN\u202fdeployment in the West Midlands which is\u202ftransforming mobile connectivity across\u202fthe\u202fBirmingham\u202fregion.<\/p>\n

The project\u202fhas always been considered\u202fextremely ambitious and\u202fhas been an exciting\u202fone for our team to\u202fwork on.\u202fThe SCF judges recognised our\u202fpioneering role\u202fin deploying\u202fthe UK\u2019s first large-scale 5G neutral host C-RAN network, anchored by\u00a0Three\u00a0<\/a>UK<\/a>,\u202fand delivering\u202fthe best possible service experience\u202ffor all its customers.<\/p>\n

Unlike many C-RAN or trial small cell rollouts, our West Midland\u2019s deployment is a fully commercial network\u202fthat is immediately available to be shared by\u202fall the UK\u2019s\u202fMNOs.<\/p>\n

The WIG entry combined a genuine 3rd-party neutral-host vision capable of supporting multiple public MNOs\u2019 coverage, as well as private 5G connectivity for local or road authorities for V2X. This type of model is likely to be highly relevant to future road and rail connectivity.\u202f\u201d<\/p>\n

Wireless Infrastructure Group led the design,\u202fconstruction\u202fand operation of the network.\u202f We deployed\u202four\u202fown fibre backbone across the city, connecting infrastructure assets located at the base of existing street lighting poles, reducing environmental impact and avoiding unsightly street clutter. Our network was delivered with the support of\u202f\u00a0CommScope<\/a>\u202fand\u00a0Ericsson<\/a>\u00a0as part of the\u202fMidlands Future Mobility<\/a>\u202finitiative, the\u202fCentre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles<\/a>\u202f(CAVs) and\u202fInnovate UK<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We would like to call out the invaluable support we had from our partners\u202fBirmingham City Council\u202f<\/a>and the\u202fWest Midlands Combined Authority<\/a>. This collaboration\u202fwill\u202fenable\u202fus\u202fto\u202fconnect up\u202ftens of thousands of streetscape assets for mobile infrastructure in the future\u202fwhile at the same time minimising environmental impacts.<\/p>\n

I would like to thank the judges and SCF for this award. I\u2019m\u202fextremely proud\u202fof our team, their achievements\u202fthis project and the important role our network will play in delivering transformational mobile connectivity to the area just before it hosts the Commonwealth Games. I would like to pay tribute to\u202four partners the\u202fBirmingham City Council and the West Midlands Combined Authority. Together, I think we forged a new and better way of delivering mobile infrastructure to the heart of urban environments, minimising disruption and delays while ensuring outstanding network performance.\u201d<\/p>\n
